Sophie Scholl is the most well-known member of the White Rose, a circle of friends who lived in Germany during the time of Hitler and who were executed for their actions to try to encourage Germans to resist Hitler and the Nazis. Over the years, there has been plenty written about the group and about Sophie specifically, and so my expectations here were not terribly high. Therefore, I was very pleasantly surprised to find in this book a very informative and well-researched narrative. I believe it to be the only book in English that really takes a look at Sophie's upbringing, the Scholl family, and the background of a person who dared raise a voice against absolute tyranny.
